A Look Back in History
The story of Rand Tower Hotel begins in 1929, at the dawn of America’s post-Great Depression boom era. A decorated WWI aviator and scion of the family behind the earliest days of Minnegasco, Rufus Rand Jr. was one of Minnesota’s favorite sons. After earning the distinguished Croix de Lafayette for his legendary aeronautical escapades during the war, he returned to his Minnesota home to make his fortune after the armistice. Rand Tower was built as a result of his investment in his beloved home state’s post-war infrastructure efforts.
As one of Minneapolis’ earliest skyscrapers, Rand Tower served as an architectural icon that defined the city’s skyline in the early part of the 20th century. Its clean lines and art deco design were simultaneously of the era and forward-looking, and have truly stood the test of time. Much of the building’s original design has been lovingly maintained and preserved for nearly a century, helping to secure it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
